This project examines the relationship between technology and music through a multiple ambient drone composition. The piece features recorded vocals, drones and metallic tones that are programmatically mixed and blended thus creating a continuous auditory experience reflecting these themes. The multiple audio streams act as a metaphor for the ongoing progression of time and technology, providing a soundscape that encourages thoughtful consideration. The accompanying online interactive piece features formless, organic shapes designed to align and react with the tonal qualities of the drone. These abstract visuals enhance the overall experience that appeals to both hearing and sight. The fluid, shape-shifting fractal-based visuals represent the dynamic and unpredictable aspects of technology, supporting the conceptual framework of the composition. The multiple drone layers serve as a sonic metaphor for technology’s relentless and omnipresent march forward, their consistent, unwavering presence echoing the steady, often imperceptible advancement of digital systems that increasingly permeate human experience. These foundational tones establish a temporal continuity that reflects technology’s persistent integration into daily life, creating an auditory representation of our technological substrate. The integration of William Gibson’s conceptualization of “cyberspace” through spoken word elements provides both historical context and philosophical framework for the piece. Gibson’s pioneering vision of digital space as a consensual hallucination becomes a lens through which to examine our current technological reality, while his language serves as a bridge between the speculative fiction of the 1980s and our present digital immersion. This project serves as an inquiry into the interaction between human creativity and technological progress and invites reflection from the audience. Together, the sound and visuals provide insight into the implications of technological advancements. The user can utilise the mouse to explore the three-dimensional space and the spacebar to start and stop the multiple audio streams.
